Nature Writer and Photographer

Several years ago I earned a degree in web development and design. I know well what makes the Internet and Worldwide Web work. The coding skills reminded me of the cryptography skills I learned in the air force. However, coding was never my life’s passion. My ikigai, from the Japanese concept of being alive with the pursuit of one’s true worth, is always being attuned with the world as a co-creator of an aesthetic that comprises beauty, empathy, immanence, natural laws, and positive changes.

The pursuit of degrees in environmental photojournalism and indigenous studies from Oregon State University fit my spirit and practices of writing and photography. What I learned shifted my world paradigm, correcting the tilt in the framework. I move forward with a drive to serve the natural world and BIPOC communities that bear the largest share of environmental injustice. This is important work.

In appreciation of the efforts of Healing Photo Art foundation, my sequoia tree photo now hangs in a medical clinic in Japan, and I donated a photo of nutria in Delta Ponds to The Wetlands Conservancy. In recent months, I sold my European starling, Japanese tea garden, and red tulips photos.

I am a trained volunteer with The Nature Conservancy. I am a member of North American Nature Photography Association.

Recently, I joined the board of wellness nonprofit Connecting from the Heart. CFTH produces music videos that help to uplift people with calming meditative images and sounds. CFTH is actively engaged in reaching out to incarcerated populations to bring moments of tranquility to challenging circumstances.

Living on the west coast of the United States feels most like home to me. Current photo projects are in the Cascadia bioregion of the pacific northwest. I like to travel, but I am doing my best to reduce my carbon footprint by living bioregionally.

A few words from the logo…

See me as the interconnection of blue skies, green trees. rivers and oceans, green plants and grasses, and an organic signature. The ovals can also be seen as the pairing of writing and photography.
